Fighting Them There

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought one of the arguments made by proponents of the Iraq War was that we need to fight them THERE so that we don’t have to fight them HERE, say, for example, in New Jersey.

It’s a crazy idea, I know. Terrorists in New Jersey? You wouldn’t think that there’d be anything scarier than Yankee fans, the mob, and women with hair, nails and jewelry that seem to be over compensating for something.

And yet this week authorities foiled a plot by six New Jersey men who planned to “invade” Fort Dix with guns and shoot as many soldiers as possible. Horrifying? Or a harbinger of things to come? These guys had no connection to al Qaeda. They weren’t even an official terrorist group. They were just six guys who got into U.S. and decided they would start some shit.

Are there more of these unofficial groups? Who the hell knows? If I were a betting person I would bet yes.

In this morning’s news was a report that moderate Republicans held a meeting with President Bush to put him on notice. If things don’t improve soon, he’ll lose support from within his own party.

Dick Cheney made a special trip to Iraq to light a fire under some butts about showing signs of improvement. Things aren’t going well.

And today on my way to work I saw a bumper sticker that read: Give War A Chance. The SUV was also covered in US Army stickers to I have to give the driver props for actually participating in the War that he/she is trumpeting.

What I don’t see are people who’ve never served in the armed forces and who support the war stepping up and volunteering. If this is something you truly believe is right then put your money where your mouth is.

God knows we can’t afford to lose any more of our National Guard and whether or not you believe in the reasons behind the invasion, something’s got to give.

Suddenly, we’re fighting them HERE.
