As books go, Atonement is not one of my favorites. The story is bleak and the ending is worse. It is one of the unhappiest novels I've ever read and when I was done I wanted to throw it across the room. So I did.

I won't ruin the ending for anyone but in case there are those of you out there chomping at the bit to see the movie version, I thought I'd offer a link to a review that I found very helpful.

Matt Zoller Seitz, one of the Star-Ledger's best entertainment writers, didn't hate the book the way I did, but he describes a movie that has taken the worst parts of the book and put them front and center in the movie.

I knew that if the movie was anything like the book I would never want to see it, but to find out that it's even more depressing makes me unspeakably sad. The characters go through hell and not all of them come out the other side and the ones that do don't necessarily deserve their salvation.

Tread carefully those of you who will investigate further, and don't say I didn't warn you.

I got your back.
