Yurt Love

Over lunch with my friend Lynne I received an education on Yurts. What's a yurt, you might ask? Well, it's not an animal, which was my first guess.

According to Lynne, a yurt is basically a glorified tent, but really, it's so much more. It's completely round, made of wood and cloth, completely weather tight, and absolutely gorgeous inside. They can have running water (kitchens, bathrooms, etc.), fireplaces, and pretty much all the other comforts of home that you'd want and expect.

And they come in these sizes: 12' diameter, 14' diameter, 16' diameter, 20' diameter, 24' diameter, and 30' diameter.

I'm thinking forget the house, the Beast and I should just get a couple of 30' yurts, throw them on some land and call it a day. Next stop: A yurt-warming party!

My hippie ex's hippie father makes them and lives in them.

Is a yurt associated with any particular culture? Or is this an American thing?

It's traditionally from mongolia.

We need to go to a yurt open house and look into this further.

Raise a couple of yaks in the yard and you can be totally off the grid.
