Highway Robbery

Let me tell you a little story about a small Colorado farmer. This farmer bought some land about ten years ago and inherited a tenant. The tenant was Valero Oil who had a gas station on the property.

Valero had been paying the previous owner $100 per month for the lease and somehow had gotten the seller to say that the farmer couldn't raise the price for X number of years going forward.

Okay. That's fine.

Now, however, the farmer has discovered that Valero has had a number of spills on the property, and that the contamination is quite extensive, according to his consultants. Valero of course did their own analysis and found that really, things were just fine and dandy.

Hmm. Things are starting to sound not so good for the farmer.

Things got worse when the Valero gas station burned down and the farmer decided that maybe rebuilding should wait until the contamination was cleaned up.

Instead, Valero has decided to SUE the farmer. I know what you're thinking: "Whaaa?"

Yeah. You can read all about it here, and if you're as outraged and disgusted as I am, please feel free to comment. The more comments there are, the more publicity is generated, the better chance the farmer has of winning the suit.

As of today, he's practically bankrupted himself fighting this big corporation from basically stealing his land.

Is this the American Way?

Thanks for sharing the article....I hope the story has a happy ending but it seems like everyone gets screwed by these big oil companies.
