Well, I just saw this headline from the NYT:
Too Old and Frail to Re-educate? Not in China By ANDREW JACOBSAre we really celebrating the Olympics in a country where, like Russia before it, people can be sent to labor camps for protesting the state?
Two elderly women were sentenced to a year of labor after seeking to demonstrate in an official Olympic protest area.
And, are the Chinese really still calling it "re-education"?
I am utterly incredulous and can think of nothing funny to say to leave you with except this: I sometimes feel like the Wicked Witch of the West walking along and moaning under my breath "What a world, what a world...".
Okay that wasn't even a little funny. Chalk it up to a super early morning and way too much to think about, including, now, little old Chinese ladies being hauled off to labor camps.

This morning's local paper told about a young local chinese woman whose mother was detained in China last May for practicing the wrong religion. She is still being help and the daughter worries about what will happen once the Olympics are over.
Here's the big difference: during the Cold War, we would never think of buying anything from Russia, and while I type this a few hundred people just bought some Chinese made crap at WalMart.
That's so sad. We support this system of a government which consistently violates human rights, but at least we are doing it at a discount.
God, Joe, that makes me so depressed because I know that you're so right. Question: What the hell is wrong with this world? Answer: it's all about the Benjamins.
